Parents are never more worried about their children than the moment before they let them leave the house to go to prom. For many parents, this is the first time that their child will be allowed to experience an event with adult amenities and pretending that there will be no drinking is an exercise in futility.
The best a parent can hope for is that their children choose to drink safely, avoid operating a motor vehicle and refuse to get behind the wheel with someone who has been drinking. That’s why more and more schools are turning to drastic measures to drive this lesson home to their students (pun is most definitely intended).
Sam Houston High School is the setting for this video and those of us who are recent high school graduates are probably aware of what this presentation will entail. These types of presentations are gaining in popularity, as schools are doing everything in their power to teach their student bodies about the dangers of drinking and driving before it is too late.
Sometimes, the best way to get this lesson across is to show students what happens when someone decides to drive drunk anyway and pays the ultimate price for their one reckless decision. No teen deserves to be cut down before they’ve had a chance to make a true impact on the world and Sam Houston High is doing their best to make sure that doesn’t happen.
While none of this is real, the message that it sends to the students is one that is much needed. Teens often think that they are invincible, that nothing bad can possibly happen to them. It is definitely important to teach about avoiding drunk driving, but it is just as important to teach them why drunk driving is bad.
Seeing the gruesome results of an alcohol fueled escapade could be all the impetus that these kids need to either avoid drinking altogether or stay put once they’ve had a cocktail or two.
We sincerely hope that these presentations become a regular part of every school year, at all learning institutions, because of their effectiveness. Be sure to take a look at this video, so you can see for yourself.
The next step? An equivalent video for all of the adults out there who think it’s okay to get behind the wheel after having a few drinks. Please share this post, to raise awareness about drunk driving.
